Earthy, fresh, and slightly floral, with a tang from the lemon soda, this Mixed Berry and Sage Craft mocktail is a personal favorite of all time. The Sage Simple Syrup brings an earthiness that you won’t get if you use a regular simple syrup.

This refreshing and delicious option is great for a dinner club, a summer BBQ, or even in lieu of afternoon coffee or iced tea.

    Ingredients

    • Mixed Berries - Fresh or frozen, either will work. I typically use the frozen berry mix from Costco.
    • Fresh Sage - Fresh sage is crucial for this drink. Its woodsy taste and smell add so much to this drink.
    • Lemon Soda - This can be something like San Pellegrino or a generic brand. Trader Joe's has some great cirtus sodas.
    • Sage Simple Syrup - Making and using your own syrup for drinks is a great way to elevate them.

Hint: I recommend making the sage simple syrup in advance so you won't have to work with hot syrup.

Related Drink Pairing: This is an excellent mocktail to serve alongside Easy White Chicken Chili.

If you want to listen to a super fun podcast about sage as an ingredient, I highly recommend checking out the "Cracking Wise with Sage" episode of the Savor Podcast (published on January 6, 2021).

The Wikipedia page on sage, whose official name is Salvia officinalis, discusses the various cultivars and uses of sage. So, if you want some prime trivia to share over mocktail drinks, listen to the podcast and read up on salvia officinalis.

    Top tip

If you're serving the Mixed Berry and Sage Craft mocktail in the hot summer months, I highly recommend having really good crushed. The rule of thumb is to have one pound of ice per guest.

    Equipment

    • Muddler

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup Sage Simple Syrup
    • 2 Large sprigs fresh sage leaves with part of the stem
    • 1 heaping cup cup mixed berries see note
    • 2 cups Lemon Soda like San Pellegrino or the lemon soda from Trader Joes
    • Crushed Ice

    Garnishes:

    • Fresh sage sprigs
    • Berries on cocktail spear

    Instructions

    • In a large picture, add the sage simple syrup, the 2 large sprigs sage leaves, and half the berries. Muddle well.
    • Add soda and remaining berries, and gently sir.
    • Fill four cups halfway with ice, and evenly distribute the drink.
    • Garnish each glass with additional fresh sage and berries.

    Notes

Mixed berries: I use a combination of blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. I actually prefer to use frozen berries because they keep the drink cold a little longer.
If you’re using fresh berries, I recommend muddling half of them, then mixing the muddled berries and whole berries before adding to the cups. This allows you to appreciate the beauty of the fresh berries as well as the delicious taste.
Lemon soda: This is the only thing I’d recommend you substitute. If you’d prefer something less sweet, you can always use a lemon or lime seltzer instead.
